Modesty:  What Do You Believe?

Take This Short Quiz

There seems to be so many differing opinion in certain religious circles today about the way people dress.  We, in the United States of America are the richest country on the face of the earth, yet we dress like we are the poorest.

There is very little agreement as to what constitutes modesty.  We know the Bible tells us to dress "modestly" (1 Timothy 2:9).  Many will attempt to use (very much out of context and meaning), 1 Samuel 16:7 as their justification in modesty.  What does it say?  "...or man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."    That passage has nothing to do with dress or modesty and it wasn't even referring to King Saul's clothing!

What do you know about modesty?   Do you think the Bible has anything to say about modesty?  Are there principles associated with modesty that we could all benefit from?

Opinions are as varied as people, but I am really not concerned with people's personal opinions when it comes to the bible.  I want to know one thing right now though:

What Do You Believe the Bible Says About Modesty?

Take this short quiz to see how you would answer these questions.

At the end of the teaching on Modesty, I'll present another opportunity to view the quiz again, and I'll present the answers that I believe is supported by the Word of God.

You may Print a copy of this for reference as you study.  (This is in Microsoft Word format.)

Answer These Questions:   True or False

1. According to the Bible, the primary purpose of clothing is to cover the body.

 2. There’s nothing right or wrong about particular clothing styles. It’s all just a matter of taste and personal opinion.

3. The Bible tells us what styles of clothing Christians should wear.

4. Since the Bible says God looks on the heart, that means what we wear and what we look like on the outside aren’t all that important; it’s what’s on the inside that counts

5. Our clothes and appearance reveal a lot about our values, our character, and what we believe.

6. What I wear is not really any one else’s concern. I should be free to wear the kind of clothes I like and feel comfortable in.

7. Modesty means: dressing in a way that is outdated, dumpy, and unattractive.

8. If a girl doesn’t wear trendy clothes that are at least a little revealing, guys won’t notice her. (If a woman wants men to pay attention to her, she’s got to “show her stuff.”)

9. Except for perverts or sex addicts, most men are not really affected by the way women dress. Most guys don’t even notice how women dress.

10. I can’t help it if guys struggle morally because of what I wear. It’s up to the guys to control their minds. I shouldn’t have to change the way I dress just because they can’t control themselves.

11. Parents shouldn’t impose their standards or beliefs about clothing on their kids. They should let them make their own decisions, even if they don’t approve of what their kids are wearing.

12. Christians are free to dress as they wish, because we are not under the law, but under grace. It’s legalistic to emphasize the importance of the way Christians dress, or for parents or youth leaders to establish guidelines/standards for the way young people dress.

13. Christian women should never wear clothes that are revealing or that look sexy (i.e., clothes designed to arouse sexual desire or interest).

14. There are some public settings where it is acceptable for Christian women to wear clothing that exposes their private parts (e.g., thighs, chest/breasts cleavage, etc.).

15. A woman can be covered from head to toe and still be dressed immodestly.

16. A woman can wear modest clothing and still be an immodest woman.

17. Most Christian girls and women do not understand the meaning, the power, or the benefits of true modesty.
